A flat in a Victorian Warehouse

London 2008

We have developed an interior design scheme for this flat in Kennington, London. To fit within the budget, we kept the shell as it was and used furniture and paint to radically change the quality of the spaces. Most of the furniture was already owned by the owners.

A strong colour scheme has been installed that react to the differing light levels within the building.

In the room receiving the least daylight, the study, a soft and dream like atmosphere has been created by painting the walls and cabinetry in a mat & warm chalky white and choosing white and galvanized steel furniture. A side table in a Louis XVIth revival used as a stand for a plant adds a surreal touch.

The brighter kitchen dining room has been painted in a linen colour chosen for its warm neutrality which unifies an eclectic range of furniture and objects.

The brightest room at the top which is flooded with light from the two large skylights has been painted in an almost black very dark plum. At all times, people and objects shine in front of the dark background. At night, this effect is even stronger as the walls seem to vanish in a similar way to that of the chiaroscuro technique found on renaissance paintings.

This projects demonstrates how strong yet simple interventions can inject a new life in an existing interior.
